North Jetty Beach on the Oregon Coast was where I first saw the Pacific Ocean. The misty morning reminded me of certain Portuguese beaches, particularly those in the north, easing my homesickness after four months in the U.S.
On that cloudy August day, a few lone fishermen dotted the shore. I wondered how much they caught, but perhaps the real reward wasn’t the fish. Maybe it was the quiet communion with the sea.
As I stared at the powerful waves, I felt their strength and energy. It was a humbling experience, and I felt a deep connection with the ocean.
