On This Rock

We were a group of 11 people, most eager to climb the beautiful walls of Smith Rock State Park, while I was content to carry my camera and capture them in action.

At one point, we joked, “If aliens arrived now and saw us climbing these walls for no apparent reason, they would be utterly confused.”

I, for the most part, felt like an alien among them—no helmet, no ropes, no desire to climb just to descend. But as the day went on, I understood why they were drawn to it. When they were up there, I imagined the breathtaking view they must have had—it looked like miles high from where I stood.

Perhaps an alien would only need to try it once to understand that humans aren’t always driven by rational goals. Sometimes, we’re simply moved by the beauty of things.
