In 2016, at 24, I had saved some money and I decided to embark on a photography adventure that would forever change my perspective. I joined a documentary photography workshop that included a 10-day trip to Morocco.
From my home country of Portugal, Morocco was just a short flight away, so it didn’t seem too crazy. We were a group of about 12 people, including two teachers, and it was the best photography experience of my life. We spent our days exploring the vibrant Moroccan landscape, capturing its essence through our lenses. Each evening, we would gather to share our images and discuss the art of documentary photography.
We spent one of the days in Safi, a picturesque coastal city, where dozens of kids were running around the streets, playing with water balloons and throwing them at each other. I’m not sure if it was a special occasion or just something they do, but it was a joyful and beautiful sight. It was a very hot day, so any form of water was a welcome relief.
I took many pictures of them playing around, and this one is one of my favorites. By chance, the children were perfectly distributed along the wall and stairs, with their challenging looks inviting us to play with them.
Whenever I look at this photograph, I’m transported back to that unforgettable day in Safi. The vibrant colors, the infectious laughter, and the sense of pure joy that emanates from the image remind me of the incredible experiences and lasting memories I gained from my Moroccan adventure.
